I have a Trader Joe’s, a Sprouts, a Ralphs, Vonns, and a dozen other grocery stories in my neighborhood, but my favorite place to shop is in Imperial Beach a half-hour down the highway near Tijuana.
It’s not just for the slow-baked and deliciously-spiced whole chicken, the tangy ceviche, the fresh fruits and vegetables, the pre-made carne asida… it’s for the price.
Here’s what $22.97 gets you:
2 small roasted chickens (pollo rost: zado) $3.69 ea
salsa fresca – really really good salsa fresca – $2.49
cheese tamale – $1.49 (they were out of my favorite, pineapple tamales)
fish ceviche – $2.67
2 huge grapefruit – 25 cents
3 big avocados – $1.29 ea (they only sell them in 3’s)
3 lovely mangos – 45 cents each
3 limes – 45 cents total
There’s also something called “Zanahorias En E” on the receipt for 96 cents. I can’t figure out what that was. Oh yeah, it was the pickled carrots. Had to try them. (Yum, by the way.)
The Point Loma Seafood place down the street is great, but we can’t get out of there without spending over $50. Even though their ceviche is probably made with “better” fish, it costs double and I think I actually prefer the concoction by the guy at La Posta Market because it’s made with their salsa fresca.
But better than anything, when I go there, I feel like I’m traveling. Everybody moves slower. People talk with each other. They’re patient with my practically nonexistent Spanish that I mix with Italian. And if you ask “What’s that?” you will get the produce guy, two Mexican Mamas and an Asian Auntie shouting recipes at you.
$20.97 well spent.
