A couple of weeks ago I posted a call for a list of female solo motorcycle travelers because I felt I'd lost touch. Wow! I knew some of the names, but there are so many more!
Somehow, it makes me feel a great deal of satisfaction. I used to feel so alone. People would stare and ask me "aren't you scared?" and I'd say yes and no and all that but I'm doing it anyway.
It wasn't until 1988 that I struck out on my own, unable to get my husband or anyone else to go with me on a motorcycle trip to Europe. This was pre-tour and pre-moto rental days.
Stories came out of that trip. Most notably, "Trading a Husband for Freedom in the South of France." I was just starting to write, blog, and post on this topic in the early 90s, demonstrating that yes, indeed, it is safe (at least as safe as it is for a man) to travel the world. The growing number of women who are traveling solo are writing and posting and making videos that multiply that message. You can view the growing list on Instagram, and please add to it. Thank you!
