If you’re traveling down the California coast next week you’ll have a unique opportunity to experience one of the rare minus-low tides of the year. Herbalist Catherina Abby Rich is offering a Seaweed Safari campfire starting 2pm on July 4th. The afternoon through the next day you’ll learn how to prepare seaweed cuisine, enjoy spa treatments, and a campfire cookout. Bring a mat and sleeping bag, and tent (optional), to sleep under the stars at a magnificent garden and wilderness center near Occidental, then safari to the ocean at dawn to gather Nori, Fucus, Kombu, Dulse, and more of the local coastal sea vegetables. Gotta register in the next couple of days Catherine has to get fishing licenses for each of the participants.
Occidental isn’t far from Bodega Bay, which is a wonderful place to stay and explore the bay by kayak. Last time I was there the leopard sharks and manta rays were so abundant that, after an hour or two in the bay, I actually stopped noticing them!
