Today I met Adam here on the beach in Point Loma demonstrating YOLO stand-up paddleboards, called SUPs here in surf-land. He let me try one out. It was really stable. A big trawler came by too fast – the speed limit here in the harbor is 5 mph, and I swear he was going twice that – but the wake didn’t phase me a bit. Adam’s an interesting adventure guy, originally from South Africa, he came to the USA in 1988 and motorcycles, surfs, and SUPs, as he says in the video below.
I guess it says something when a guy from a beach town in South Africa settles down in San Diego. He says the harbor here in San Diego at Point Loma, and Mission Bay, are both excellent SUP destinations because there is something for everyone from beginners to advance SUPers. There’s flat-water SUPing, eco tours, surf and wind SUPing.
I watched him put a few newbies on boards. He didn’t even have them kneel and then stand, just said hop on and they stood up and went. “Don’t make it too complicated,” he grinned. I grabbed this video of him giving three women who had never SUPed before a quick lesson.
Yep. It’s that easy.
You can find out more about YOLO boards on their website. YOLO stands for You Only Live Once. Nice, huh? And if you’re in San Diego and wanna SUP, give Adam a call. He’ll come meet you with some boards. (858) 952-9653
Stay tuned as I test ride a number of inflatable SUPs – YOLO, Seaeagle, Tower, and ULI – for 4×4 and motorcycle travel. Woo hoo! Have paddle, will travel!
