At the Cycle World shows this last winter I met Nancy of the Tail of the Dragon website (there’s a photo of us on the site) where they keep up with all the latest on this very famous of motorcycle roads, otherwise known as Federal Highway US 129. Here’s what they say about the road: The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles, is America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming number two with its remote 60 miles of scenic mountain highway. The area also has other roads less traveled, but just as exciting.

  • I have rode in 6 different states on much tougher roads. As a matter of fact the Dragons tail is an easy ride.
The problem is the idiots riding the road with you.
Ride the “tail” but watch for the other riders on the road, they are crazy.

  • I have ridden the Dragon many times, not because I am there to ride it, but it is the best way for me to get where I am going. I like it, but the enforcement blitz and the speed trap 30 mph speed limit have ruined it. Any time you have 14 LEOs in a 11 mile stretch, you discourage visitors from returning. The Governor is getting what he wants, basically shutting down the Dragon to motorcycles. I got stopped and issued a bogus ticket. I was told I was doing 50 coming out of a hairpin turn in 1st gear. My bike is good, but not that good.
