Motorcycling in Europe this summer? Here’s the rule book

by Carla King in Uncategorized8 Comments

Mike Werner has helpfully posted some legal pointers for motorcyclists visiting Europe. In all countries, it is mandatory to ride with a helmet. Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, German, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, UK. Going to Spain? Take note: Motorcycles and sidecars are not allowed to have a trailer. It is also mandatory to have spare light bulbs for your front and rear lights. Thanks Mike! I also read somewhere that those Spanish highway patrol are merciless, so if you see a car flashing lights at you, slow down, your fellow motorist is warning you that a speed trap lies ahead.

That is only in a few countries in Europe. Spain is one of them as far as I know. Most countries allow trailers but the max speed of a bike with a trailer in the Netherlands is 80 km/h on the highways!

  • I just luved u’r site & all its info…I’m a south indian (live in Bangalore, India) & I too keep going on motorcycle jaunts (though mine’s a toy, 125 cc, compared to u’r bikes)…i’ll keep u posted reg my trips…bye for now.

  • One time a made tour from Serbia to Tunisia without a helmet it was amazing nobody paid attention… maybe they have their own problems;)

  • After a long search, I finally found your site. My granny used to say, that you must never give up to reach a certain aim.
So keep on going like I did it recently.

  • Hello!
I am going to europe this summer and am hoping to travel by motorcycle. Do you have any suggestions where to find a good bike with a side car in Europe?
    Thanks so much.

  • Just surfed in and found this really interesting place here. A lot of good stuff for everybody. Go on like this and i will surely visit your site again sometime.

  • Re. Spanish toll roads. I rode through Spain earlier this year – wonderful experience! Many well-surfaced, nearly empty autovias. Traffic on toll roads is even less dense. Bikes pay the same as cars, and it’s not cheap. About 47 miles cost €8.15 (abut $11.4). However, the police appear not to patrol the toll roads and if you keep to the 120 kph speed limit (about 75 mph), you will find yourself passed by most other traffic.
On single lane roads car and truck drivers usually pull over to let bikes pass. In the south the locals seem to regard helmet wearing as optional despite the law.
    Ride safe.
