I stayed in Monterey for a few days last week to try out a new bike and the weather was perfect, reminding me to spread the word (again) that the Northern California coast in October and November can be the best time to ride. Mind you, there was heavy rain for a day just a couple of days before, but honestly, if that happens to you, just hole up in a nice hotel or hot springs (Monterey or Mendocino or, if you want to camp or desire a true California experience try Esalen in Big Sur or Harbin Hot Springs or Wilbur Hot Springs) and wait it out. There is no fog this time of year, and the beaches are warm and empty of tourists. I ran barefoot on the beach on each of the three days I was there–dodging the kelp and some washed-up jellyfish. Beyond the surfline the sand is soft and warm once the sun shines on it. Inland, Carmel Valley was downright hot and Big Sur was bright, cool, and clear. I was supposted to test out some new winter gear but it was too warm! Motorcycle gloves from Olympia and First Gear pants — luckily the pants had a zip-out liner and I had brought my other gloves just in case. Will review the new stuff on a later ride. The photos below were taken at about 4:30 pm. Enjoy! And remember, Northern California summer days on Highway 1 are often very cold and foggy, you'll have better luck if you visit during fall or spring.
