International Female Riders Month: Spotlight on Becky Shimek and Cara Mae McGuire

by Carla King in Uncategorized0 Comments

Becky McGuire & Cara Mae McGuire of Helmet Hair MagazineIn the spotlight today in 31 Days of Women in Motorcycling series are Becky Shimek and Cara Mae McGuire, founders, publishers, and editors of Helmet Hair Magazine, a rapidly-growing quarterly online magazine that directly serves the female motorcycle community. I was thrilled to connect with them in 2009 at the Women's Motorcycle Conference in Keystone, Colorado.

Becky has a B.A. in Communications and has worked in the public relations field for over ten years. She ditched the back seat of her husband’s ride in 2004 and hopped atop his vintage 1986 Yamaha FZ600 to get her riding chops in. She now owns a 2006 Buell Lightning XB12Scg and 06 Kawasaki Ninja 250 and loves zipping through the many Hill Country backroads of Texas. She also is a freelance writer and has contributed articles for various magazine's including Thunder Roads, Throttler, and Directions magazine.

When Cara Mae is not cruising the streets on her XF200 Motard, she can be found off-road on Texas trails riding through nature on her Honda XR100R dirt bike. Or you might find her tucked away under a tree with pen and paper using good old women’s intuition, a love of motorcycles gifted by her Dad combined with her degree in Sociology to cultivate a more holistic approach to motorcycling from a female’s perspective. She is whole heartedly in love with her Beamer riding husband and her two amazing teenage MX sons. On the side, she fights the good fight, being a strong advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, as her youngest son was diagnosed with this disease in 2008.

For more on the both of them, check out this interview with Becky and Cara Mae by VaVaVroom's Denise Maple on SideStandUp Motorcycle Radio.
