Bloomberg News reported today that Harley-Davidson Posts 9.9% Higher Profit.

Sales of Harley-Davidson-brand cycles in the quarter were 54,216 in the United States, up 13 percent, and a record for a first quarter. The company said it still expected to build 317,000 Harleys this year and 400,000 a year by 2007.

The company shipped 76,693 motorcycles, including 74,090 Harley-Davidson-brand bikes and 2,603 Buell sport models, up 4.3 percent from the 73,549 in the year-earlier period.

The average new Harley-Davidson model sold for $12,401 in the quarter, James L. Ziemer, Harley-Davidson’s chief financial officer, said. Sales of parts and accessories increased 5.8 percent to $169.2 million.
