
I found this Strange Maps blog entry interesting: China As An Island displays the Chinese heartland, which does not include Mongolia, Tibet, or any of the 14 countries with which it shares its borders. Even thought it looks smaller, note that in this space — an area half the size of the USA — twice as many people as in the USA live here. Yet I still found it amazingly vast with huge areas populated only by people living close to the land in tiny villages. In 1997/98 and again in 2007 I traveled through Northern China, the Mandarin-speaking area of the country that is dominated by the Yellow River. You can read the China Road dispatches online.
